WYSIWYG Welsh Terriers Conformation Showing/Breed Clubs |
Conformation Showing This is what most people think of when they hear the words “dog show.” In a conformation show, each dog competes not only against other dogs, but also against a written standard of perfection for its breed which the judge has memorized and is comparing each dog to as he judges it. The example of each breed that comes closest to the breed standard wins Best of Breed. Depending on the number of dogs entered in a given show, there may be many other categories of winners before Best of Breed is awarded. The dog selected as Best of Breed goes on to compete in Best of Group and, if it wins there, Best in Show. At every level, dogs are judged on points of similarity to the standard for their breeds. The purpose of conformation competition is to help breeders choose the best dogs to produce the next generations of their breeds. Only intact (not spayed or neutered) AKC-registered dogs who are excellent examples of their breed in both physical characteristics and temperament should be entered in a conformation show. If you want to compete in AKC conformation showing, you need to acquire your dog from a breeder who understands what you are looking for and who is personally involved in the sport. Conformation titles are offered also by the United Kennel Club and the Union Cynologie International whose shows are sponsored in the United States by the International All-Breed Canine Association of America - IABCA. |
Breed Clubs It's fun and educational to be in touch with other people who own and love your breed. We are members of two Welsh terrier clubs, the Welsh Terrier Club of America (WTCA) and the Welsh Terrier Club of Northern Illinois (WTCNI). |
