WYSIWYG Welsh Terriers Canine Good Citizen |
The Canine Good Citizen Test is an AKC program. The dog and handler proceed together through a series of exercises designed to indicate whether the dog has a stable, responsive temperament and good manners. Some of the exercises require the dog to walk on a loose leash by its owner, come when called, and remain calm when faced with distractions such as a jogger running past and being approached by a friendly stranger. Dogs need to be able to respond to basic obedience commands to earn a CGC certificate. Many obedience schools offer classes to help prepare dogs to pass these tests. Some offer the tests themselves. Therapy dogs are often required to have a CGC certificate. Dogs of any age and any breed, including mixed breeds, may participate in a CGC test. The dog must have proof of a current rabies vaccine, and if the test is held in conjunction with another AKC event the dog may have to be six months of age or older. |
