WYSIWYG Welsh Terriers
Grayslake Weekend 2002
News from our "Grayslake weekend"

Grayslake, IL - annual site of the Great Lakes All Terrier Associationís Terrier Group show/the Welsh Terrier Club of Northern Illinois Specialty Show and two all breed shows!

From St. Louis, the trip was made by seven Welsh terriers and four handlers (another Welsh terrier, one papillon and two handlers were entered but couldnít make the trip).

Friday was the first all-breed show (Little Fort Kennel Club of Waukegan). We started with Novice obedience (Bryn and Taly were entered) - neither received a qualifying score (they did not pass the recall exercise). We then moved to the conformation ring where Luke, Lark and Hogyn were entered. Luke was awarded Reserve Winners Dog! Then back to the obedience ring where Moose was entered in the Open class) - he did not receive a qualifying score (he went around, instead of over the broad jump and the high jump when returning with the dumbbell).

Friday afternoon was an AKC sanctioned B-Match and Canine Good Citizen Testing (Chain OíLakes Kennel Club and Park Shore Kennel Club). Curly, Lleu, Bryn and Luke were tested in the CGC test and all four passed! They can now proudly wear the CGC title behind their names.

Hogyn was the only Welsh Terrier entered in the B-Match. After receiving his ribbon for Best of Breed, he went on to win the Terrier Group and proceeded to win Best Adult In Match! A young Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen won the Best Puppy In Match.

Saturday was the Great Lakes All Terrier Association's Terrier Group Show. The Welsh Terrier Club of Northern Illinois supported the entry of Welsh Terriers as its specialty show. The Welsh Terrier sweepstakes was just prior to the regular judging. Hogyn was Best of Opposite Sex to Best in Sweepstakes and Luke was Reserve Winners Dog in the regular Welsh judging.

The regular obedience classes were a time conflict with the Welsh terrier judging, so Bryn did not show in Novice obedience, nor did Moose show in Open obedience. The judging of the Veterans obedience class was scheduled at a later time. Taly participated in the Veterans class, where she entertained judge, handler and spectators with her "virtual" sits, creative off-lead heeling and recall!

We then joined the Welsh Terrier Club of Northern Illinois for lunch and a club meeting. It was wonderful seeing old friends again! The remaining afternoon time was spent shopping at the booths and then on to a visit in Milwaukee for dinner with Jim and Ellen. After dinner, eight Welsh terriers and their people walked through a beautiful neighborhood and park to arrive at Lake Michigan - it was quite a little parade! The Welsh delighted in playing in the sand and waves.

Sunday was the second all breed show (Chain O' Lakes Kennel Club) and Hogyn was Reserve Winners Dog.
